JOB TITLE: CHILDREN’S HUMANE EDUCATION LEAD
ORGANISATIONAL OVERVIEW:
A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary is a primarily volunteer-run, registered charitable organisation. Founded in September 2017, the sanctuary offers a forever home for rescued, abandoned, and surrendered farmed animals. We are the first farm sanctuary in Canada to be accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.
HUMANE EDUCATION OVERVIEW:
Humane education encourages compassion and care for all living beings and the environment by developing attitudes of kindness, sensitivity, appreciation, and responsibility. Learners of this program will develop a personal understanding of who they are by recognizing their own skills, talents, and abilities, while fostering a sense of self worth. By helping people develop a deeper connection with animals, they will also strengthen their empathy and respect for the environment and all those who inhabit it. When one understands the interconnectedness of the living world, they can recognize how their beliefs, decisions, and actions impact the lives of others.
CHILDREN’S HUMANE EDUCATION LEAD JOB OVERVIEW:
As the Children’s Humane Education Lead, your responsibilities include facilitating the Pen Pal Program where children, ages 5-10, can communicate with sanctuary animals through pen pal letters. This involves writing and coordinating responses.
The Pen Pal Program allows children to choose a sanctuary animal "pen pal" and learn about their needs and characteristics, promoting animal welfare. You may also organise field trips for children to meet their pen pals in person and provide educational resources to enhance their learning.
Additionally, you will help create a children's activity book aimed at educating children about caring for and understanding farmed animals. This role encourages children to develop writing skills, creativity, and empathy towards farmed animals.
