Animal Caregiver Position

Close Date: Open until filled
Location: 4275 Howie Road Duncan BC V9L 6N3
Shift Times: Morning and Evening shifts.
Days Off: TBD
Vacancy Type: 4 Month Contract - Full Time
Biweekly Hours: 80
Planned Start Date: TBD
Criminal Record Check Required: Yes
Compensation: $18/hr during 4 week training period, then $20/hr for the remainder of the contract. 
Probationary Period: 3 Months

JOB SUMMARY
A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary is committed to caring for rescued farmed animals and ensuring their needs are consistently met. In accordance with the mission, purpose, values, and strategic direction of A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary, animal well being and welfare are a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at the Sanctuary.  The Animal Caregiver will participate in care duties for rescued farmed animals and the daily operation of the sanctuary. 

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Facilities Director, the Animal Caregiver will perform various tasks to ensure all the animals’ care needs are met following the guidelines laid out by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and The Open Sanctuary Project.  Typical duties include animal feeds; pen and shelter cleaning; filling waters, pools, and wallows; animal care; hoof and tusk trims; minor medical tasks; feed and produce pick ups; and operating a motor vehicle and related farm equipment.  Responsibilities will vary depending on weather conditions.   

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Operating a motor vehicle for supply runs, picking up produce, disposing of compost, recycling materials, and waste at the local waste management centre, picking up medication, and transporting animals to veterinary clinics.
  2. Unloading and putting away feed, bedding material, and supplies.
  3. Feeding the animals in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
  4. Operating a tractor to move materials, supplies, and structures. 
  5. Ensuring medication is given out appropriately and as directed. 
  6. Providing minor medical care for animals as directed.
  7. Cleaning and maintaining animal shelters, coops, and enclosures.
  8. Washing feed dishes.
  9. Cleaning water bowls and troughs and replenishing them with water as needed.
  10. Providing volunteers with guidance as required.
  11. Observing animal behaviour and reporting any concerns or oddities.
  12. Adhering to safety protocols and procedures at all times.
  13. Ensuring facility hygiene and adherence to health and safety protocols.
  14. Comfortable working with potentially hazardous conditions, such as contact with parasites, zoonotic diseases, animals with behavioural challenges, and chemicals.
  15. Capable of learning and following safety protocols around animals with behavioural issues.
  16. Maintaining and keeping records as required.
  17. Performing other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, And Experience.  
One (1) year recent related experience working with large and/or small farm animals or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Valid BC Class Five Driver’s Licence.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labour and lift/push/pull a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Willing to maintain a positive and respectful attitude
  • Capable of working in harsh and all weather conditions
  • Walking and standing for extended periods of time
  • Comfortable working alone on occasion 
  • Knowledge of animal behaviour 

Additional Information: Steel-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing are required.
